NOT MY PASSION

Mum will be mad I want to quit university but I think I have chosen the wrong career

DEAR DEIDRE: I’M studying for a degree in law but I think I’ve chosen the wrong career.

I’m 19 and male. The university is providing online tuition for us but I can’t seem to knuckle down and keep thinking about my other passion – art and illustration.

I didn’t do art A-level and don’t want to put myself even more in debt by stopping this degree and starting something else, or finishing this degree then going to art school.

My mum wants me to carry on with the rest of my degree and she’s done so much to help me get to university in the first place, but I feel so torn.

DEIDRE SAYS: You have done brilliantly to get on to a law degree course.

It will be hard work but don’t throw away a fantastic opportunity at this stage for a field in which it is very hard to earn a living.

Tell your tutors you are struggling.

It won’t be anything they haven’t heard before.
Explore your art as a way of unwinding.

An art career is a big nut to crack so it is sensible to have a good degree under your belt first.
