‘Tide is turning’ in Lewis Hamilton’s battle with Max Verstappen, says F1 commentator Martin Brundle

MARTIN BRUNDLE believes there's very little to separate Max Verstappen from Lewis Hamilton and says "the tide is turning".

The F1 commentator was asked about the racing abilities of both drivers if they had equal equipment.

Hamilton, 35 has won six world titles, five of those with Mercedes - F1's dominant force over the last six years.

And if Verstappen, 22, had the same equipment as Hamilton, Brundle believes there would be little to separate the elite racers.

During a Twitter Q&A on Sky Sports, Brundle was asked: "After all you've seen of the two, in equal machinery, who wins over who over the course of a season: Hamilton or Verstappen?"

He replied: "Until 2019 I’d have always put my money on Hamilton, but I believe the tide is turning and that’s why I’m particularly sad not to be witnessing Max vs Lewis right now."

Petrolheads will have to wait and see on that, though, with the first eight races of the season postponed due to coronavirus.

All races up to and including the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on June 7 were called off.

Boss Chase Carey is still hopeful of rescheduling some of those abandoned events when it's safe to start the 2020 season.

Carey said: “We are all committed to bringing our fans a 2020 championship season.

“We recognise there is significant potential for additional postponements in currently scheduled events, none the less we and our partners fully expect the season to start at some point this summer, with a revised calendar of between 15-18 races.

“As previously announced we will utilise the summer break being brought forward to March/April, to race during the normal summer break period and anticipate the season end date will extend beyond our original end date of 29th November, with the actual sequence and schedule dates for races differing significantly from our original 2020 calendar."
