BLESSING IN DISGUISE

De Gea replacement Romero has BETTER Premier League record with Man Utd No1 a major doubt for Liverpool game

MANCHESTER UNITED may need to rely on Sergio Romero between the sticks for this weekend's massive clash with Liverpool.

David De Gea, 28, hobbled off during Spain's clash with Sweden on Tuesday night with what appeared to be a pulled muscle.

Back in the team having been usurped by Chelsea star Kepa Arrizabalaga in recent games, De Gea limped off the pitch after booting clear a back-pass.

But it could be a blessing in disguise for Man Utd, with Romero, 32, actually boasting a far superior record in the Premier League, according to the stats.

The Argentine keeper has played just twice this season - once in the Europa League and once in the Carabao Cup.

Romero has much less experience in the Premier League than De Gea - with just seven appearances, to the Spaniard's 283 - and he last played in the league in the 2017-18 season.

Despite that, Romero has arguably had a better go of things in goal for Man Utd in his limited game-time.

While De Gea has kept 102 clean sheets from his 283 games, Romero has kept six of seven - only once conceding a goal.

You have to go all the way back to the August 2015 campaign to find the one occasion Romero conceded in the Prem - in a 2-1 defeat to Swansea.

That means Romero has a clean sheet percentage of 86, compared to just 36 per cent for De Gea.

Despite the huge discrepancy in games played, De Gea has still made TEN errors leading to goals - with Romero blemish-free in that regard.

Romero also makes more saves per game - at 2.9 to the Spaniard's 2.8 - while being more accurate with his passing.

The Argentine stopper has distributed 7.7 successful long balls per game in his seven matches, compared to De Gea's 6.6.

Whoever is in goal is likely to have a tricky afternoon, though - as Man Utd, experiencing their worst start to a season in 30 years, go up against league-leaders Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds sit 15 points ahead of United in the standings after just eight games, with the Old Trafford club sitting 12th.
