MANCHESTER UNITED dropped out of the race for Timo Werner because they are increasingly confident of landing top target Jadon Sancho this summer.
The RB Leipzig striker looks set to join Chelsea when the transfer window reopens after the Blues triggered the German's £49million release clause.
And according to reports, Manchester United dropped their pursuit of Werner when they realised their main target Sancho could be available.
The Red Devils are hopeful a £100million-plus offer could tempt Borussia Dortmund into selling their prized asset.
The winger has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford despite his time as an academy player at rivals Manchester City.
Sancho hit a hat-trick last weekend in his first start since the Bundesliga's return, as Dortmund swept aside Paderborn 6-1.
The 20-year-old had been eased back from injury by boss Lucien Favre but showed his class with a second-half salvo to take his league tally to 17 goals for the season.
With Sancho sure to contribute in the goalscoring department, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears to be prioritising the 20-year-old's signing ahead of a new striker.
United have already agreed an extension to Odion Ighalo's loan deal from Shanghai Shenhua until the end of January 2021.

That has left the door open for Chelsea to sign Werner before his release clause expires on June 15.
It came after Liverpool, who he had been hotly tipped to join, also pulled out of the race for his signature.
The 24-year-old has 31 goals in 40 appearances this season for Julian Nagelsmann's Leipzig side.
