Appearing from her home in North London, Kate told her GMB co-hosts, and close friends, Ben Shephard and Ranvir Singh: "He's now COVID-free, the fight of the virus has been won.

"But it's wreaked extraordinary damage on his body and we don't know if he can recover from that.

"It is an absolute miracle that he's still here."

Fans at home were overwhelmed with emotion as they watched the moving interview, flocking to social media to share their reaction.

One wrote: "This Kate Garraway interview on GMB is absolutely heartbreaking."

Another added: "What a brave and emotional interview this morning. I’m in tears watching you and praying hard that Derek pulls out of his coma soon".

A third shared: "Watching this morning in floods of tears. So brave of Kate to do this.

"We are all sending so much love and prayers to all the family at this unbelievable time."

GMB host Piers Morgan also sent his love as he watched from home, writing: "Wow. Such a moving, emotional, inspiring interview on @GMB with my fabulous friend @kategarraway about her family’s #coronavirus turmoil.

"So proud of you Kate, as Derek would be too. We’re all behind you, hoping & praying for a miracle."

He later added: "Long-time co-presenting colleagues & the closest of friends.. I can’t imagine how hard that was for @benshephard to interview @kategarraway about the worst time of her life on the show they normally do together.

"Great job Ben (& @ranvir01 too)".

Kate, who married her husband in 2005, also opened up about telling Derek that she loved him as he slipped into a coma all those weeks ago.

She said: "He couldn't really speak to me because of the mask, but he was begging me, 'I feel like I'm suffocating, please let them put me in a coma', because there was a debate about that.

"But I said 'no we've got to wait' because if his lungs can handle it that's better. Then on the Sunday morning they rang me up and said we're going to be him in a coma, and he just said to me 'I love you, I have to leave you', and I said 'it's only for three or four days and you're going to fine this is good and good'

"He said to me 'you have saved my life, I don't just mean now, I mean marrying me and the children,' and I said I love you, I love you - and then he was gone and that was it."
