How did the Chuckle Brothers become so famous?

Barry and his brother Paul made up the comedy duo ‘The Chuckle Brothers’.

The brothers are originally from Rotherham, in South Yorkshire, and were introduced to the stage at a young age by their father, James Elliott.

Barry initially went by the stage name Gene Patton and worked the London club scene, even performing with an 18-year-old Peter Sellers in 1943.

They first broke onto the BBC in 1985 with the show Chuckle Hounds, which was aimed at pre-school children and saw the comedy duo dressed as dogs.

But they found fame with ChuckleVision, which became known for the brothers' catchphrase 'To Me To You' and won a host of awards.

The show was one of the longest running children's programmes on the BBC continuing for 22 years from 1987 to 2009 – it was also the longest running sitcom after Last of the Summer Wine.

The brothers released an album in 1995 entitled “To You to Me”, featuring 11 tracks, and many of the tracks were based on their catchphrases, such as "To me, to you" and "Silly You, Silly Me".

Did Barry have any other siblings?

While Paul was Barry’s younger brother, the duo were actually the two youngest in a family of four siblings.

They had two older brothers Jimmy and Brian - who are known professionally as the Patton Brothers – and have starred alongside their siblings in their show ChuckleVision.
