The 52-year-old Derek was first being diagnosed with the virus six weeks ago.

In a video posted on Kate's Instagram, she showed her schoolboy Billy's touching homemade present after making his entire family out of Lego figures including Kate, Derek, his sister Darcey and both sets of grandparents.

She said: "Billy made this for his Dad’s carers to show how much he means to our family & to say thank you for fighting to bring him back to us.

"I am hoping they will let Derek have it by his bed. But even if they can’t THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts - you are superheroes.

"Love to all in these terrible times - the separation from loved ones whatever the reason is so tough . #staystrong #staypositive #keephopealive."

Kate has been giving fans regular updates on his condition, usually during the Thursday night Clap for Carers events each week.

In an emotional post to fans, the Good Morning Britain host said she believed Derek can still hear his family as they made a video call to him last night in his hospital bed.

She said: "So our #nhsclap was a little different tonight. We still clapped & cheered as much as ever but I couldn’t film on my phone as had Derek on FaceTime throughout!

"Of course we can’t KNOW but I believe he can hear us & thought at least the incredible @nhs team’s looking after him would hear a fraction of our gratitude."
Political advisor Derek, 52, was taken into hospital on April 1, where he tested positive for Covid-19, and still remains in intensive care six weeks on.
