From Adele to Madonna – the coronavirus lockdown celebrity winners and losers
IN life there will always be winners and losers – and lockdown is no exception. Since coronavirus struck the nation has been adapting to necessary changes to everyday life.
Some well-known figures have risen to the challenge to do their bit during the crisis . . . while the reputations of others have certainly taken a hit as a result of their antics during the pandemic. Emma Pietras brings you the covid heroes and villains.
The Losers
Madonna
Sitting naked in a bath strewn with rose petals in one of her many mansions, the 61-year-old singer showed how out-of-touch she is by telling fans: “Covid is the great equaliser.”
Ant Middleton
Hard man Ant told people to “calm the f*** down” about the coronavirus.
In a post on Instagram, the 39-year-old star of SAS: Who Dares Wins said: “Covid-19 doesn’t bother me. Why? Because I’m strong and able.” He apologised and deleted his comments.
Trinny Woodall
Putting a twist on the title of her old TV show What Not To Wear, the 56-year-old fashion expert’s partner Charles Saatchi wandered in naked while she live-streamed a beauty video.
Kyle Walker
Man City's Kyle hosted a sex party with a pal and two call girls, and later visited his parents in Sheffield.
The 30-year-old England star then had the cheek to complain of “harassment” over reports of his two breaches of lockdown rules.
Steph McGovern
Telly journalist Steph, 37, was poached from the BBC to present a new daily live show on Channel 4.
Lockdown meant it came from her home. Only 234,000 watched and it lasted just six weeks after neighbours complained filming was causing a disturbance.
Gal Gadot
Wonder Woman actress Gal, 35, assembled a host of famous names on social media to sing John Lennon’s Imagine – but it looked like her celeb pals were just trying to stay in the limelight.
Ricky Gervais wasn’t happy. He said: “It was an awful rendition.”
Jack Grealish
He launched a video appeal telling everyone to stay at home – then the 24-year-old Aston Villa skipper crashed his Range Rover into two parked cars after visiting a friend.
Grealish apologised the next day in a grovelling video posted to Twitter and he was fined £150,000 by his club.
Olly Murs
With no one to sing to, pop star Olly, 35, has taken to playing pranks on girlfriend Amelia Tank, 27.
But he took things a step too far when, last month, he sat with his bits inside a Pringles can for her to discover. He had to say sorry to horrified fans.
Harry and Meghan
While Covid-19 victims died, the 35-year-old and the Duchess of Sussex, 38, headed off to LA moaning about privacy and deciding not to speak to the most-read newpapers in Britain.
Dominic Cummings
The PM’s top adviser, 48, travelled hundreds of miles to stay in County Durham.
He faced down journalists at a press conference and was backed by Boris Johnson.
The Winners
Leigh-Anne Pinnock
The Little Mix singer, 28, melted fans’ hearts after revealing footballer Andre Gray, also 28, proposed as they celebrated their fourth anniversary in lockdown.
Sophie Ellis-Bextor
THE singer donned sequins and heels to perform nightly in her kitchen. Fans loved the renditions of Take Me Home – with lyrics changed to “stay at home” – and other big hits.
The 41-year-old’s sons Sonny, 16, Kit, 11, Ray, eight, Jesse, five, and 16-month-old Mickey joined in.
Amanda Holden
The BGT judge kept us entertained with pictures of her mowing the lawn in her wedding dress and putting out the bins in a ballgown.
Amanda, 49, gave us fashion envy with the outfits she wears to her job on the Heart breakfast show and still had time to put out an NHS charity single.
Prince William, Kate and family
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have carried out public engagements via Zoom and taken the time to speak to the children of key workers.
The couple also led Clap For Carers with Prince George, six, Princess Charlotte, five, and two-year-old Prince Louis.
David Birtwhistle
With no Love Island on TV, Too Hot To Handle teased the nation with sun, sand and. . . no sex.
The Netflix dating show banned intimate touching, which meant contestants including 30-year-old Brit David, connected on a deeper level and emerged global stars.
Matt Lucas
Funnyman Matt’s song Baked Potato – updated with lyrics about avoiding coronavirus – raised cash for Feed NHS.
Matt, 46, also hosted Channel 4’s lockdown show Reasons To Be Cheerful and is set to revive Little Britain.
Joe Wicks and Rosie Jones
YouTuber Joe fast became our favourite PE teacher with his free home exercise classes. And the 33-year-old grabbed a Guinness World Record when one of them was watched by nearly a million people.
Then his wife Rosie, 29, impressed after stepping in for an injured Joe.
Captain Tom Moore
By walking 100 laps of the garden at his Bedfordshire home in April, the former British Army office raised more than £32million for NHS charities.
Captain Tom, who turned 100 days after the incredible feat, earned himself a knighthood for his efforts.
Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones
Lockdown TV hit Normal People made overnight stars of Paul, 24, and Daisy, 22.
There are even social media fan accounts dedicated to the chain Paul wears in the explicit BBC3 drama.
Adele
While many of us are carrying a few extra pounds since lockdown, Adele has been showing off her super-svelte bod.
The 32-year-old singer has lost 7st since last year thanks to a plant-based diet and exercising five times a week.
Jack Whitehall and Roxy Horner
With their loved-up PDAs while out shopping for essentials, the comedian and his model lover have become the ultimate lockdown couple.
Ladies’ man Jack, 31, started dating 28-year-old Roxy earlier this year.
