SIP, sip, hooray – the weekend is here.

With staying in definitely the new going out, it’s worth knowing how to jazz up a night “in-in”. So raid your cupboards and mix up some cheering tipples . . .

ESPRESSO SERVICE: Got a coffee machine or bags of ground coffee? Whip up an espresso martini. Just shake one part coffee with two parts vodka and one part coffee liqueur — likely already hanging about at the back of a cupboard. Garnish with a few coffee beans, if you like.

PINK CLINK: OK, so this raspberry pink gin will not be ready this weekend. But get cracking now and you’ll have it for the bank holiday next week. Add raspberries to a plain gin — any brand will do — and leave for a week. Make sure you turn the raspberries every day. Then enjoy with a mixer of your choice. I like mine with lemonade.

If you prefer your drinks simple, you can still bring a touch of that fancy bar feeling to them

ICE ONE: If you prefer your drinks simple, you can still bring a touch of that fancy bar feeling to them. Simply add some of your favourite herbs to your ice tray, to make tasty and impressive-looking ice cubes. This works particularly well when served with gins and it adds to the flavour. A favourite of mine is rosemary — great in a G&T.

NOT TO BE MOCKED: If you are staying off the booze, or your kids fancy a fruity treat, whip up an easy, refreshing mock mojito using just lemonade, cucumber, frozen raspberries and mint. Chop the cucumber and mint and pop into 200ml of boiling water on the hob. Turn the heat off and leave for two minutes before adding a handful of frozen raspberries. Once they are softer, slightly crush them with the back of a spoon before straining the mixture. The drink will keep in the fridge for around a day. When serving, pour around 40ml of your mix into a tall glass with ice, and top with lemonade.
