Wagamama to reopen 67 restaurants for delivery across the UK

WAGAMAMA has announced plans to reopen 67 of its restaurants for delivery by the end of the month after weeks of lockdown.

The popular pan-Asian chain is the latest establishment to announce an increase in its delivery service, following in the footsteps of KFC, McDonald's and Burger King.

The sites will reopen in stages, with 24 branches reopening this Thursday, May 21, and another 20 restaurants to follow next week on May 28.

Wagamama says it plans on having 67 restaurants open by the end of June, although it's yet to name the remaining locations.

The Japanese-inspired restaurant chain has already reopened five kitchen sites for delivery orders only.

Customers will be able to order food for delivery from all 67 reopened sites, with some also offering a takeaway service.

For home delivery, you'll be able to place orders via Deliveroo, Just Eat or Uber Eats, depending on your location.

These apps all charge a delivery fee, so remember to factor this into your order.

Customers will also be able to order food for takeaway at a handful of branches through the Wagamama website.

Once your order is ready, you'll be able to head down to their chosen restaurant to pick up your food.

Due to having less staff in kitchens, customers will have a reduced menu to choose from, so you may find some of your favourite items are temporarily unavailable.

When The Sun checked using Deliveroo today, options included chicken katsu curry, chilli squid and steamed chicken gyoza.

We've asked Wagamama what other items are included on its reduced menu and we'll update this article when we hear back.

Restaurants will be open 4pm until 9.30pm, Thursday to Sunday, during their first week of being open - this will then expand to Wednesday to Sunday.

The only exceptions are Kensington and Peckham which are trialling a seven-day opening system.

The reopened branches will be mainly restaurant sites, although some will be kitchen-only establishments.

Before the coronavirus outbreak, the kitchen-only sites were used only for delivery and takeout orders.

Emma Woods, Wagamama CEO said: "Over the past couple of months our focus has been on creating a safe working environment for our team members and our two-week trial has enabled our teams to return to work safely.

"The next logical step for us is to open additional sites throughout the UK, this will still very much form a test and learn approach for the business.

"The response of our return has been extremely positive and we look forward to our guests being able to get their Wagamama fix."

To help keep staff safe, workers will have to fill in a health questionnaire before every shift.

They'll also have no direct contact with delivery drivers and will follow an increased health regime.

Wagamama, which has around 135 restaurants in the UK, announced it was temporarily closing all UK branches on March 23.

Five Guys has also now reopened branches in the UK.

Another chain to restart their service is Starbucks, with a handful of locations open for delivery and takeaway.

Greggs has also reopened a "small number" of outlets - but only in Newcastle.
