Bank holidays in the UK usually fall on a Monday but this year the early May bank holiday fell on Friday May 8.

The government moved it from Monday May 4 so that it can coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

What time is B&Q open over the bank holiday weekend?

The hardware retailer was open as usual on Friday from 8am until 5pm although this varied depending on the store.

On Saturday, stores will be open from 8am until 5pm and from 10am until 4pm on Sunday.

Which shops and restaurants have reopened?

THE following high street chains have started reopening branches following the coronavirus shutdown.

You should note that most of the food chains are only open for takeaway and home delivery.

Will I have to social distance while in store?

B&Q has now reopened all 288 of its stores nationwide although staff and customers will have to follow strict social distancing measures.

This includes two metre floor markers throughout shops and perspex screens at checkouts.

Customers may also have to queue to get into stores, with shops limiting the number of shoppers allowed in at one time.

Shoppers will only been able to buy products that are available to take away on the day and it has temporarily stopped services such as kitchen and bathroom design, paint mixing, timber cutting and key cutting.

It will also only accept card and contactless payments.

Why is B&Q allowed to open?

DIY stores are classed as "essential" retailers during the coronavirus crisis and are allowed to remain open during lockdown.

Even so, B&Q closed all physical shops on March 25, and customers were only able to use home delivery and click and collect services to buy goods.

But ever since the retailer went online-only, B&Q customers have been forced to queue for more than an hour to get onto its DIY.com website.

Now, it's confident that it can operate all stores safely for both staff and customers.

"We’re confident that our strict social distancing measures keep customers and colleagues safe while helping homes and gardens, as well as people’s wellbeing, to be maintained," said chief executive Graham Bell.

"Whether shopping in our stores or online, we ask that all our customers follow the government’s social distancing guidelines and shop responsibly only for what is necessary."
