Steven, 33, can be heard gasping “It’s a f***** kangaroo!” as the wallaby darts past his van.

He said: “When I came round the corner it was in the middle of the road.

“I knew I had to get some footage so my mates believed me! I’ve only ever seen one in a zoo before.

“I’ve lived round here ages and never heard of one being loose. But as soon as I posted on Facebook lots of people started saying they’d seen it before.”

Sharing the video on Facebook, Steven's sister Gemma said: "Anyone lost a kangaroo? My brother saw this in Panfield yesterday morning. How bizarre.”

The wallaby is thought to have escaped from a travelling carnival that visited Braintree in June.

Carrie George said: “I think it got released in June because it was at Braintree Carnival, I was in shock when it hopped in front of me and hopped in front of cars.”

Colin Wakeling added: “It’s been around for a long while, I saw it ages ago, no-one believed me.”

And Jordan Platt said: “I saw it up by the BMX track around 4.30am Friday morning.”

Nicola White, senior scientific officer for the RSPCA, said that if the public spotted it they should not attempt to catch it.

"As these animals are not native to the UK, releasing a wallaby into the wild would be an offence".
