The officer had been called to the West Byfleet Recreational Ground last night after reports of a group of 30 people gathering as they flouted the coronavirus lockdown.

He then went to arrest a 15-year-old for a public disorder offence when members set upon him.

The horrifying footage shows the officer holding one of the people to the ground before the thugs begin attacking the lone cop.

They then hold him to the ground and kick him in the horrific assault.

The gang can be heard yelling as they batter the officer and drag him along the ground.

Horrified bystanders in the park watch on in shock, with one witness saying: "He's just doing his job".

The entire ordeal was filmed by teen girls who laughed as the cop was bundled across the ground.

Witnesses said around 10 youths downed booze in the sun on Thursday before the solo cop waded in to tell them to disperse.

Mum Claire Brown, 48, saw five police cars parked by the park moments after she stepped out with her daughter for the weekly Clap For Our Carers.

The primary school receptionist said: “I heard rustling in the bushes outside and officers were searching for one of the lads.

“Then a policeman shouted at someone ‘stop where you are, don’t move’.

“I saw the video on social media, it was awful.”

Another neighbour said: “We heard a lot of shouting and then saw the officer trying to stop the lads running off, they seemed young."

The grounds of leafy West Byfleet Park were littered with cans of cider and cigarette buts yesterday.

PROBE LAUNCHED

Local residents said groups of people had been swelling in size after lockdown measures were relaxed last Wednesday.

Surrey Police said the officer had been called to the West Byfleet Recreation Ground on Camphill Road, West Byfleet just before 7pm last night.

They said: "While dispersing the group, a 15 year old boy was placed under arrest for a public order offence.

"Members of the group then turned on the officer attacking him and causing minor injuries to his wrist and head."

Three teen boys aged 14, 15 and 18, were later arrested on suspicion of assault against an emergency services worker.

They remain in custody and enquiries are ongoing.

Temporary Inspector David Bentley, Borough Commander for Woking said “No one should have to face being assaulted as a result of simply doing their job – especially when the officer involved was trying to protect their community.

“We are aware that there were multiple witnesses to this incident, a number of whom filmed the attack, and we continue to urge anyone with any information or footage to get in touch with us.

“Officers come to work every day, fully aware of the risks that they face as frontline workers, due to potentially volatile situations as well as the current pandemic – yet it is appalling that events such as these should take place.

"We are pleased to confirm that the officer sustained minor injuries, but it could have been a lot worse, and assaults against any emergency services workers will not be tolerated.

“On a final note I would like to thank the members of the public who have shown an overwhelming amount of support to our exceptional officers.”
