Embarrassed Redknapp told Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain: “I thought I had lost her.

“I thought I had done her foot.”

Explaining how the incident happened Harry said he had just dropped Sandra off at the shops in his Range Rover.

He said he thought she had already crossed the road when he pulled the motor forward – but the traffic had slowed down and he ran “straight across the side of her ankle”.

Harry said: “I thought a car had hit her.

“I heard her scream. I didn’t realise it was me.”

Harry – dad to Sky pundit Jamie – added: “She seemed to have lost all her energy. It slaughtered me to see her not well."

But the former West Ham manager, who has been with his wife since they were teens, said: “She has picked up the last couple of weeks. There has been a massive improvement.”

Following the incident last year Sandra looked tired and pale as she emerged from Poole Hospital in Dorset in a wheelchair with her right leg in plaster.

Witnesses told how an ambulance was called when she was left screaming in agony amid a pool of blood.

Sandra had been a regular in the audience as daughter-in-law Louise Redknapp, 41, took part in Strictly Come Dancing.

In the interview Harry also touched on his chances of becoming England manager, telling the ITV show: “I'm definitely a non-runner now.My days are gone now.”
