A MEDIC has revealed his payslip showing he earns £48,000 after a Question Time guest claimed all doctors earn £80,000.

Rob Barber, an IT consultant, suggested on the BBC show last week that "doctors earn more than £80,000" as he blasted the Labour manifesto.

NHS specialist Dr Asif Munaf shared his payslip in response to Mr Barber's "ill-informed" opinion.

Dr Asif, who also once appeared on Dragon's Den, tweeted: "I spent 6 years at medschool and a further 7 years of specialist training and I get paid £48,000.

"He needs to #factscheck and use some of his £80,000 on a new shirt and trim."

He said he works 40 hours a week and his earnings cover his single household with an 18-month-old son.

Dr Asif, a Sport and Exercise Medicine Registrar, told the MailOnline that doctors are "massively underpaid".

It made me question the profession I am working in.

He added: "Mr Barbers' ill-informed comments made me appreciate the sheer ignorance that is prevalent.

"People just assume that doctors have high salaries without necessarily knowing the full pay scale.

"If Mr Barber is on £80,000 some of my less qualified peers who are on triple my salary after only a three year degree, it made me question the profession I am working in."

Mr Barber, 38, argued with the Shadow Justice Secretary Richard Burgon over the Labour's plans to impose £83billion in new taxes.

Some viewers were left baffled after he claimed he was not in the top five per cent of earners, despite revealing his salary was more than £80,000.

Mr Barber said: "Every doctor, every accountant, every solicitor earns more than that, that's not 5 per cent!".

While not every doctor gets paid more than £80,000 a year, some are able to earn into the six-figures range.

As of April 1 this year, a consultant can earn basic salary of £79,860 to £107,668 per year depending on the length of service, according to Health Careers NHS.

The pay range for salaried GPs, who are employees of independent contractor practices, is £58,808 to £88,744.

GPs who are partners in their own practices can earn more than £100,000, with the UK's top-paid doctor taking home £519,000 last year.

Dr Asif's tweet amassed more than 2,000 likes and many have praised him for his response.

One Twitter user wrote: "The NHS consultant pay scale starts below £80K and those doctors will have a minimum of 8 years postgraduate experience working in and serving the NHS.

"Brilliant staff grade doctors don’t ever hit that salary and they are tremendously skilled and experienced."

Dr Asif is a medical registrar and junior doctor and has gone through both Foundation and Core Medical Training.

He currently works as locum registrar at The Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham while also running a wellness business where he offers IV vitamin therapy and bespoke blood testing - a popular procedure among Instagram inferences.
