China’s president Xi Jinping was greeted by supporters waving Hong Kong and China flags as he arrived to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the former British colony’s return to Chinese control. Elsewhere in the city, pro-democracy activists had staged a series of protests in the run-up to the visit.
