Eric Trump blasts House subpoenas against Deutsche Bank as ‘deep state at work’

President Trump’s son, Eric Trump, on Tuesday denounced Democratic lawmakers for issuing subpoenas to a range of banks seeking the president’s financial records, calling it an example of the “deep state at work.”

“This is presidential harassment 101,” Eric Trump, the executive vice president of the Trump Organization, said on Fox News’s “Fox & Friends.” “My father always talked on the campaign trail about the deep state. And this is the deep state.”

“They don’t actually want to do their job,” he continued. “They don’t want to fix health care. They don’t want to fix immigration. … They just want to subpoena everybody that has ever met Trump.”

The president, his family and his private businesses on Monday filed a lawsuit against Deutsche Bank and Capital One in an effort to block the banks from complying with congressional subpoenas.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) issued the subpoenas to get access to records on Trump’s personal finances.

The lawsuit was filed in the Southern District of New York just days after it was reported that Deutsche Bank began handing over Trump’s financial documents to the New York state attorney general’s office. The office had issued a subpoena to the financial institution in March.

Eric Trump argued Monday that the lawsuit did not reflect that the president’s family and businesses were “adversarial” with any of the banks.

“We’re just saying, this is presidential harassment,” Eric Trump said. “This is all these people do. They’re not winning. They don’t want to do their jobs. They want to harass Trump.”

He later described Democratic lawmakers as “deranged,” before saying that they have harassed several members of the Trump family.

Eric Trump’s comments echoed the complaint filed by Trump’s lawyers.

“The subpoenas were issued to harass President Donald J. Trump, to rummage through every aspect of his personal finances, his businesses, and the private information of the President and his family, and to ferret about for any material that might be used to cause him political damage. No grounds exist to establish any purpose other than a political one,” the complaint states.
