WEBVTT WORKERS COULD SOON BE BACK ON THE JOB. CHANDI: YOU’VE SEEN SELF DRIVING UBERS TRAVELING AROUND THE CITY. BUT NOW DOZENS OF PEOPLE WHO WORK CLOSELY WITH THOSE NEW TECH CARS ARE OUT OF JOBS. SELF DRIVING CARS. THEY ARE NOW AT THE CENTER OF MORE THAN 100 UBER LAYOFFS IN PITTSBURGH AND SAN FRANCISCO. THE WORKERS IMPACTED OPERATED THE AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES. NOW THEY ARE EITHER LOOKING FOR JOBS OR TRYING TO GET THEIR OLD ONES BACK. >> THAT IS UNFORTUNATE. I GUESS THAT’S THE EVOLUTION OF THINGS. CHANDI: UBER PULLED THE PROGRAM AFTER A DEADLY CRASH INVOLVING A PEDESTRIAN IN ARIZONA. UBER WOULD NOT SAY WHAT LED TO THESE LAY OFFS. BUT AN UBER SPOKESPERSON RELEASED THIS STATEMENT, SAYING OUR TEAM REMAINS COMMITTED TO BUILDING SAFE SELF-DRIVING TECHNOLOGY, AND WE LOOK FORWARD THE COMING MONTHS. THE WORKERS WHO LOST THEIR JOBS CAN APPLY FOR ONE OF 55 NEW POSITIONS. IF YOU REMEMBER, JUST LAST WEEK, UBER, LOCAL AND STATE LEADERS, ALONG WITH MAYOR BILL PEDUTO HAD A MEETING TO KEEP COMMUNICATION OPEN AND TO DISCUSS WHEN TO RESUME AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE TESTING IN THE CITY. >> THERE IS AN INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY, NOT ONLY TO BUILD OUT AN ENTIRE INDUSTRY THAT WILL BE A TRILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY AND MAKING PITTSBURGH ONE OF THE GLOBAL CENTERS FOR IT. BUT AT THE SAME TIME TO BE ABLE TO LOOK AT THE CHALLENGES OF MOBILITY FOR ALL PITTSBURGHERS. CHANDI: MAYOR PEDUTO’S OFFICE RELEASED THIS STATEMENT TODAY SAYING THE SELF-DRIVING VEHICLE INDUSTRY IN PITTSBURGH IS THRIVING AND ADDING JOBS EVERY DAY. INTERNAL PERSONNEL DECISIONS BY ONE COMPANY OR ANOTHER DOES NOT IMPEDE THAT, OR IMPACT THE INDUSTRY’S LONG-TERM GROWTH. THERE’S NO WORD ON WHEN THE PROGRAM WITH THE SELF DRIVING CARS WILL RESUME.
