Uber lays off approximately 100 employees involved with self-driving operations
Uber has laid off approximately 100 employees involved in its self-driving operations, Pittsburgh's Action News 4 confirmed Wednesday.
A majority of the employees who operated the self-driving vehicles were located in Pittsburgh but some were located in San Francisco.
The layoffs come in the wake of a deadly accident involving a self-driving vehicle in Arizona. After the incident, the self-driving vehicles were pulled off the street in all cities in which they were previously operating, including Pittsburgh.
Affected employees are eligible to apply to one of approximately 55 new positions as a mission specialist.
The company is still working to return to the road and plans to resume operations this summer.
An Uber spokesperson released the following statement to Pittsburgh's Action News 4:
“Our team remains committed to building safe self-driving technology, and we look
forward to returning to public roads in the coming months.”
