PSA - disable substratum.

[deleted]
[deleted]

I forgot to disable it and saw no adverse effects. Dirty-flashed the full Beta 3 image over B2, and everything came up fine.

u/_tommack_ avatar

Wasn't the case for a few of us in the last beta... See in the comments here https://www.reddit.com/r/oneplus/comments/7quamo/oxygen_os_open_beta_2_for_the_oneplus_5t/dss37wf

Safe to install all the plugins after flash or does it not work at all with ob3?

u/_tommack_ avatar

You can re-enable afterward the update is completed.

Great to see removing the clipboard, was almost counter productive.

Anyone found any bugs and know if the Bluetooth issues are better?

[deleted]
[deleted]

May I know what Bluetooth issues were there in the previous versions?

Problems with general connectivity, particularly using Android Auto.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Ok, thanks :)

u/grizz281 avatar

Been having problems with Bluetooth and Android Auto as well

Dude, I loved the clipboard. It worked so well for me and it was a feature I didn't know I needed. Personally, I'm sad to see it go. But eh, oh well.

SwiftKey has a clipboard storage built in for recent copied text. The way the new clipboard had a pop up every time it was used, which was then an app in recents made it difficult to multi task like before with copied text.

Having it optional might have been a better idea, but seeing as it was an additional app that might be hard to toggle.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Ah, I see the issue. I never faced that problem because I didn't use my phone like that

There are often when sharing links was good, but using copy and paste for other tasks got annoying very quickly.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Understood. I'm guessing I didn't use it to the entire potential

Hiding the navbar and using screen gestures works really well! Wow I did not imagine that but it is better than AIO Gestures. Great update overall.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Would love if they added fingerprint gesture to get assistant

This is a good idea. Long touch of the sensor.

It feels so smooth and the fact the nav bar is gone when typing feels beautiful. I love this update so far.

u/UsernameTakenBwahaha avatar

As much as i love this whole gesture based thing, it kills the Google assistant for me. Even though i can summon it by saying "Ok Google.." , I miss the home button shortcut.

In assigned a gesture in Nova to launch assistant. Not as useful from every app, but also not too big of a deal.

How are the quick settings? I heard oneplus removed the ability to expand icons like WiFi and mobile data.

Is that still the case?

Edited

Tap is toggle on, long press to get more options.

Uhm, that's not like oreo.

If you press the text on oreo, the tile will be expanded.

On the other hand, a long press on OOS brings you to the settings app, totally breaking the purpose of the quick settings.

The Gestures are awesome, but now im stuck with the same problem i had before when I was using AIO, as to exiting screen pinning. No other way to exit other than holding back and recents. Also no way to enable Assistant.

What do you mean by exit screen pinning? Split screen? (If so, just slide the dividing bar to the top or bottom, depending on which app you want to stay active. )

u/thegiltron avatar

screen pinning is and option that lets you lock a certain application to the screen. So lets say if you hand off your phone to somebody to view pictures, it locks them to the photos app and they cant navigate to anywhere else on the phone. In order to exit screen pinning you have to hold the recents and back button then prompts for a password.

Ah, ok.

How do you go to multitask?

screenshots if possible??

u/RxSIN avatar

Of what exactly?

u/gigatex avatar

Not OP but personally I'd like to see a video of it in action.

Here you go. It's a little finnicky for me, especially when the keyboard is open or when at the home screen. However, will give it a try for a few days.

u/gigatex avatar

Oooh it looks like a really cool concept though. Thanks for turning the tap indication on by the way!

more reply More replies
u/koolbody avatar

Yeah it's still a bit buggy when the keyboard is open. That's why I'm still using the Fingerprint Swipes App to add left/right swipes for back and recent to the fingerprint sensor.

u/GhostCasper avatar

Umm, the recent apps animation looks weird to me, but it's the first version, so let's hope they'll polish that before an official release.

Nice job ripping it off from the iPhones...

Seriously, what else do they want to copy from apple?

Be creative!

u/jabbeboy avatar

Would you rather have no solution at all or a working solution? There is no Apple patent for sliding up or down.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Nope, I'm just saying they could have been creative and they could have come up with their own solution.

This is clearly just a "Oh the iPhone has got it, we want it too" reaction.

u/jabbeboy avatar

Heheh...yeah they probably though the same with the face unlock :D hahah

[deleted]
[deleted]

Well, face unlock is actually useful and they bothered fixing the flaw apple had (needing a swipe to unlock).

Marketing it as a competitor to Face ID is BS though, it's nowhere near as secure.

Changelog:

Phone

*Added pick-up gesture switcher: You can now choose which way you slide (up or down) to pick up a phone call

System

*General bug fixes and improvements

*Removed Clipboard function: Thanks for your feedback, we removed this feature based on that.

*Applied CPU security patch: CVE-2017-13218

*Added new Navigation gestures that you can enable by going into settings and disabling the nav bar.

India only

*Added SMS categorization function for India only: This is an India only feature that auto-sorts your SMS messages into categories

u/CyanKing64 avatar

"*Added pick-up gesture switcher: You can now choose which way you slide (up or down) to pick up a phone call" YES! Now just add this to the 5T and I'll be happy. All those times I've declined calls because I'm so used to the Google phone app.

This is for the 5T

u/CyanKing64 avatar

Whoops. Was reading through a OP3T post earlier and when I came back, I thought this was that

Now just add this to the 3/T and I'll be happy

u/CyanKing64 avatar

I hope you guys get it too. Its infuriating when you decline a call when just want to accept the call

I just updated and started using the navigation gestures. It takes a bit of getting used to but I'll try and keep it on for the day. So far I'm happy with them.

How you go back? Which is the gesture?

u/MisterMrMister avatar

Swipe up from the lower left or right side of the screen.

I'm assuming the left and right are back and recents respectively (depending on of they're swapped), but how do you get to the home page? Swipe from the middle?

u/MisterMrMister avatar

Swiping up from the centre takes you home. Pausing for a bit after swiping up will take you to recent apps. Swiping up from the left or right side of the screen takes you back. You can use those both interchangeable.

u/zsmb avatar

Pausing for a bit

Is it just me, or does that "bit" feel like approximately 12 minutes?

more replies More replies

Ah, thank you!

EDIT: I'm also assuming that the double tap/long press options are greyed out?

Could u post a video of how it looks like? If it looks good I'll consider flashing the beta.

u/MisterMrMister avatar

https://streamable.com/wzf5t

I tried to show it here. I tried to do everything as fast and as natural.

u/2literpopcorn avatar

You should have enabled touch pointer.

Does it feel smooth and intuitive? Something like the iPhone X is a pretty good benchmark.

u/MisterMrMister avatar

The gesture for going home is pretty smooth and responsive, including going to the recent app overview. The gesture for the back button is a hit or miss for me right now. Sometimes I seem to "miss" the right area to activate it. I'm going to keep using it for a bit to see if I can get used to it more.

Would you recommend switching to the beta? I rather not having to update it then flash back the original and wiping my phone.

How responsive is it?

It works pretty well. They need to decrease the delay on the swipe and hold for the app switcher, but I am not getting false positives and it seems quite responsive. Biggest adjustment is the slightly lower keyboard.

u/mrandr01d avatar

I'm getting ad popups that are obscuring the bottom of the display. Is there still a navbar? What's the touch target look like for the new gestures?

There is no nav bar and no visible touch target. Just swipe from bottom to use.

u/mrandr01d avatar

A lot of apps have functional buttons/touch targets for other stuff down there... How's it know if I'm trying to use the navbar, or whatever button an app has there?

Also, I've seen conflicting documentation for the back button. Do you swipe up, or swipe right? How's that work?

Does the animation feel better when using the gesture? It looks super placeholder to me.

Can you swipe left and right on the bottom to switch between apps?

Is car Bluetooth fixed for anyone in this update?

What was the issue?

Bluetooth would pair to my car but playing music would do absolutely nothing.

Also can't change any of the Bluetooth settings in developer options.

Hmm I had a similar issue, what ended up working for me is clearing Bluetooth data. Settings > Apps > Application List > Show System apps from the menu and then clear Bluetooth data

Will try, thanks for the tip!

so gestures like the iPhones? this feature seems interesting. still wish they didn't remove the physical navigation bar.

Physical buttons are still there. It's an option you enable or disable

Edit: I'm stupid. I realize what you meant now.

u/wat4dragg avatar

Are you sure the 5T has a physical navigation bar?

[deleted]
[deleted]

It has the nav bar it has had all along. You have to go to settings to change it to the swipe gestures. It's an option you enable or disable for now. I will say though. They're smooth and the nav bar being gone while typing is nice.

Finally an Open Beta release that makes me consider switching from a stable channel

If we switch from the stable channel, will we continue to get OTA updates?

As in once it exits out of beta, do we get placed on the stable channel again or do we have to do it ourselves manually?

u/GhostCasper avatar

No, you have to do it manually. These are two separate channels, so you'll stay in beta until you wipe the device and flash the stable version.

Not going to update until the actual update comes out as I'm a power user, but I'm looking forward to the navigation gestures. I mostly toggle my navigation bar because it annoys me, this phone feels great without them.

u/Madrascalcutta avatar

That SMS categorisation sounds real interesting.

Will help to block and filter the tons of spam I'm bombarded with daily.

Nice, phone pick up gestures and system gestures. Sounds really good!

Says it will unroot my phone, any way around this?

install zip from twrp then magisk then reboot to twrp then reboot system

Why did they get rid of the feature to let the task bar disappear and slide to get it back?

Out of curiosity, do you mean it will either be always showing or fully disable now (in beta)? No way to only hide it when wanted?

Yes that's what i mean, i want to be able to hide it but use whenever i need it by just sliding upwards

I agree with you!

You can go straight to beta 3

I dirty flashed from OB2 with magisk and had many bugs. Had to go back to OB2. I will try to clean flash it today.

  1. You go to notifications and click the settings button it doesn't work.

  2. Home and recents buttons were broken. Back button works.

  3. Go to launcher settings and click about me it doesn't work.

  4. Theme changing didn't work for me. And settings page is white no matter which theme.

There was one more but i don't remember that. Gesture based navigation was pretty good and felt smooth.

[deleted]
[deleted]

if I wanted to go back to 4.7.6, do I simply restart into recovery and flash the http://downloads.oneplus.net/oneplus-5t/oneplus_5t_oxygenos_4.7.6/ rom here? then full data wipe and cache?

It keeps failing for me.

Nobody asked them to switch from horizontal to vertical swipe. Although doing so is not a bad change in my opinion, as swiping up is slightly easier on the hand compared to swiping right. But swiping down to accept a call was weird af. Especially as other apps (WhatsApp e.g. are using an up-swipe).

Took them 5 months of complaining (since beta 14 on the OP3/T) but finally at least... At this speed we will get the slider improvements with the OP6T! fingers crossed

Don't want this to sound demanding, they can do whatever they like with their OS. I just don't get why they obviously go for the weird choices. If they would release a spreadsheet with all their planned changes, people could tell them instantly what will obviously cause negative feedback. I just question their UI/UX guys working on OxygenOS.

I did asked them and my friends did too. I wanted to swipe up to receive call

u/UESPA_Sputnik avatar

Only happens with their own dialer app. I'm using the latest Google Dialer on my OP3 and don't have this. What I dislike is that since the latest beta, all incoming notifications make a sound while on a call.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Google solves this by putting the phone in DND when a call is started.

[deleted]

Seriously? You can change your phone's name, it's not OnePlus' fault that Spotify looks at the device's model name rather than its name.

u/BishItsPranjal avatar

I completely understand that. I never said it's OnePlus's fault. But it's annoying and it has to be either Spotify or OnePlus who fixes this, right? Rightfully it should be Spotify but it's foolish to expect anything from them imo so I was hoping OnePlus could do something, das all.

That's not how development works. You're expecting OnePlus to change something system-wide just for one 3rd party app.

u/BishItsPranjal avatar

Now that you put it like that, it does make sense. I'm sorry, I'll try to be more reasonable next time!

Good job ripping off the iPhone gestures...

Why not get creative and create their own?

[deleted]
[deleted]

Because they work, they're fluid, and it's an option you can use or not. Nothing wrong with it and I love it and imagine many people do lol

[deleted]
[deleted]

I'm just saying its kinda lazy...

They probably saw the iPhone X and went "We want this too" and just copied it.

The fact that multitasking takes way longer to launch now, which is directly copied from the iX, is infuriating.

They didn't even bother reflecting on wether the gestures made sense or wether they could improve them, they just did a quick copy paste...

So dont use them...

[deleted]
[deleted]

If they were good, I'd happily use them.

Because they aren't, I won't.

But this is a sign that it should be improved.
