The Melvins to double the bass players, double the sludge on their new album

The Melvins have never been “easy listening,” and that’s why we like them. But for their upcoming album Pinkus Abortion Technician, the pioneering sludge-rockers will make audiences even queasier than usual by doubling their low end. Longtime Butthole Surfers bassist Jeff Pinkus (thus the title) will join existing Melvins bassist Steven McDonald, making the Melvins a foursome for the time being. “We’ve never had two bass players. We’ve had two drummers and two guitar players so it makes total sense to now have two bass players,” bandleader Buzz Osborne says in a statement, adding, “Pinkus Abortion Technician is a radically great record and was a stone groove to record. We drank a lot of coffee and enjoyed each other’s company.”

And indeed, adding Pinkus to the Melvins makes a lot of sense. More sense, you might say, than the pair of covers included on the eight-song album: The Beatles’ “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” and the Butthole Surfers’ “Graveyard.” Along with the announcement of Pinkus Abortion Technician—due out on April 20, naturally—today The Melvins announced a slew of North American tour dates so you, too, can go and get your guts rumbled by the wall of joyous noise. Those are listed below.
