The Princess of Wales revealed in her first newspaper interview in 1980 that she thought she was “suitable” for royal marriage due to the low number of notches on her bedpost.
Diana told journalist Danae Brook that unlike her Sister Sarah – who was a former girlfriend of Charles – she had been accepted by family.
A then 19-year-old Diana implied that she was a virgin, feeling that was the only reason the Royals had approved of her as a future bride.
According to the interview, which has recently resurfaced, Diana reportedly said: “You see my sister Sarah was going out with Charles last year and she talked about it to the press but she talked too much and they murdered her.
“I’m OK because I haven't got a background.
“That's what everyone else seems to have. I mean I haven't had a chance to have that kind of background, I'm still only 19!”
It came following reports – which have been denied by the palace – that the 19-year-old had met the Prince on the Royal Train in the middle of the night.
Diana had said: “'I've never been near the train, let alone in the middle of the night!”
It is understood that the woman spotted on the train was actually Camilla Parker Bowles, who Charles married in 2005.
Princess Diana married Prince Charles in a spectacular ceremony in 1981.
Their turbulent marriage ended in divorce in 1996, hitting headlines world wide.
Her life was tragically cut short on August 31, 1997 after a car accident in a Parisian tunnel, leading to an outpouring of national grief.
