Carrot Weather, the famously mouthy weather app for iOS and Mac, is now in beta on Android. The app reports the weather with sarcastic patter, doing a mediocre impression of the abusive AI from Portal. Thankfully, you can switch to “professional” mode and enjoy a sophisticated, customizable weather app without distractions.
This is a weather app for those of us who are never happy with our weather apps, who know exactly what we want and what we don’t want. For instance, I want the chance of rain and the “feels like” temperature, and I do not give a single shit about air pressure. In the summer, I want to know the UV index so I know whether to wear my embarrassing but protective wide-brimmed hat. Carrot Weather lets me get just that info.
You can customize every data point on Carrot Weather’s “today” summary, hourly timeline, and ten-day forecast. Each slot can display one of several data points: actual temp, “feels like” temp, precipitation chance and amount, wind speed, air pressure, humidity, UV index, cloud cover, visibility, dew point, sunrise/sunset, moon phase, and nearest weather station. You can display both Celsius and Fahrenheit temperatures at once, like your phone is an HSBC road sign. You can even choose between two data sources, Weather Underground and Dark Sky.
To remove ads, and to enable the customizable home screen widget (not yet released), you’ll need to pay $4 a year. Charging a subscription fee for a weather app is a bit cheeky, so filthy casuals can stick with a one-time paid app like 1Weather. But if you want a hyper-specific forecast, and the freedom to change it by the season, pay up. Then pick your desired level of sarcasm (there are several) and get customizing.
