Update: We've recently partnered with Carvana to now make it easier for select riders to permanently ditch their car. For more details on our newest pilot, visit here.

Ridesharing has already challenged the way North Americans see car ownership, with 250,000 passengers in 2017 giving up their cars because of Lyft. Now, it’s time to take an even bolder step toward creating a better future for our cities, our planet and future generations.

Since day one, we’ve had a vision that cities should be built around people, not cars or parking lots. Achieving our vision starts with having the freedom to choose from multiple, cost-effective and sustainable options to get where you’re going. Today, Lyft is proud to announce Ditch Your Car, a program offering passengers transportation credit to give up their cars for 30 days from Oct. 8 to Nov. 6. Participants will have access to Lyft Shared (in available markets), Zipcar, local transit and bike share partners in more than 35 cities nationwide.

“We are on the brink of a massive shift in personal transportation, moving away from ownership and into transportation as a service. Ditch Your Car is an extension of the mission we’ve been committed to for over a decade,” said Co-Founder and President, John Zimmer.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Starting Sep. 26, over 35 markets, including New York, Los Angeles and Toronto, can sign-up here: ditchwithlyft.com/. Participants will be randomly selected to participate in select cities (use the drop-down to find your city!)

  2. Once chosen for the challenge, you’ll receive an email with details for the program including transportation credits.

  3. Transportation credits will include Lyft Shared (in available markets), Zipcar, as well as a local transit and bike share partner to get around your city for one month.

  4. The Challenge starts Oct. 8 and ends Nov. 6 “At Zipcar, we’ve long envisioned a world where car sharing outnumbers car ownership, making our cities greener, healthier and more walkable,” said Zipcar President, Tracey Zhen. “We’re challenging more people to join us and ‘test drive’ the low-car lifestyle by taking full advantage of the many mobility options now available in our cities.”

Lyft is committed to bringing together the public and private sector to shift behavior and drive down personal car ownership nationwide. Think you’re up for the challenge? Sign-up for a chance to Ditch Your Car!
