The U.K. Information Commissioner's Office has found that the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust violated the U.K. Data Protection Act when it shared sensitive health information of 1.6 million patients with DeepMind, a Google subsidiary that employs artificial intelligence, according to an ICO news release. "As a result of our investigation," Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham wrote, "the Trust has been asked to sign an undertaking committing it to changes to ensure it is acting in accordance with the law, and we'll be working with them to make sure that happens." The announcement also included lessons that can be gleaned from the incident. However, an independent review found that DeepMind itself did not violate the law because it acted as a "processor" and not a "controller."
