The U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office has started to investigate the use of facial-recognition software at the King’s Cross development site, the Guardian reports. The ICO warned businesses need to demonstrate their use of the technology is “strictly necessary and proportionate” and does not violate any laws. The agency added it will “consider taking action where we find non-compliance with the law.” The owners of the King’s Cross said the facial-recognition tech has been implemented “in the interest of public safety and to ensure that everyone who visits has the best possible experience.” U.K. Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham said she was "deeply" concerned about the use of the tech as she confirmed the investigation. U.K. Biometric Commissioner Paul Wiles called for an update to laws around facial recognition in response to the King Cross's use of the tech.
