YABATECH inaugurates institute to address skill gap in oil and gas sector

The Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has inaugurated the institute of Petroleum Technology (IPT) to enhance capacity development for the oil and gas sector.

With the inauguration of IPT

Ladipo explained that the institute was designed to equip youths with the necessary skills and produce graduates that would be employable and self-reliant.Speaking at the unveiling of the institute and inauguration of Board of Trustees, the Rector, Dr Margaret Ladipo said the project, which started in 2013 was in collaboration with Global Maritime West Africa Limited (GMWAL) and Society for Underwater Technology (SUT).

Ladipo explained that the institute was designed to equip youths with the necessary skills and produce graduates that would be employable and self-reliant.

“It was observed that the overseas specialized training for competence in the sector requires huge amount of money in foreign exchange, the essence of the institute therefore, is to make these trainings available to young Nigerians whose expertise are required to man the various technical positions in the industry,” Ladipo stated.

With the inauguration of IPT, the rector expressed confidence that the institution would produce graduates that will be self-reliant while also encouraging local content development.

Chairman, GMWAL, Ross Agazuma disclosed that the institute was inaugurated to address the dearth of local manpower for the exploitation of the vast energy resources.



 IPT products would be properly equipped with necessary skills to drive the sector.

He explained that the institute was set up as an autonomous and self-funding organization with its own governing board and constitution, under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) platform, targeted at complementing government efforts in developing infrastructure in tertiary institutions..

According to him, “IPT YABAtech is an industry-oriented energy institution offering educational support and direction to the oil and gas industry through the development of manpower and delivery of quality research and continuous professional development courses in support of the local content initiative of the federal government.”

He explained that academic activities at the institute is structured into six faculties, comprising of five centres namely, oil and gas technology, offshore technology, centre for risk and safety technology, energy and technology business management as well as pipeline technology.

He added that instructors are drawn from Petroleum Trust Development Fund (PTDF) scholars, Global Subsea University and the energy industry, both locally and abroad.

In his remarks, Chairman, Governing Council, Mr Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) disclosed that IPT is positioned to provide competency based on entrepreneurial education.He expressed confidence that IPT products would be properly equipped with necessary skills to drive the sector.
