No, You Don't Have to Squat When You Poop

Some products, like the Squatty Potty, try to convince you that sitting normally on a toilet is actually an impairment when it comes to having a bowel movement. But that’s not quite the case.

As this video from the SciShow YouTube channel explains, only a few, very small studies suggest squatting is better than sitting because it aligns your rectum and anal canal slightly better than sitting upright does. While a squatting position may make the actual “going” a bit easier, it’s not going to solve all of your digestive problems like constipation or bloating. And while it’s fine to want a smoother experience, there’s no evidence that better bowel movements equate to better health. Truth is, you’re not missing out on much when you sit normally on the toilet because you’re not restricting yourself much at all. Basically, if you tend to have normal bowel movements, there’s no real reason to squat. Keep doing what you doo-doo. That said, there’s no harm in squatting either, so just go with whatever is the most comfortable for you.
